Dealing with burnout

One thing most developers or people in general constantly deal with is burnout. To be so enthusiastic one minute and the next, you have no motivation to work. Here's a list of a few things that help me deal with situations like this.

  1. Get rest: I know this advice feels basic, but it isn't and can never be overemphasised. The major reason you are dealing with burnout is mostly out of stress and lack of adequate rest. Staying affixed to your work chair, staring at your computer and writing codes can get really captivating and most of us can't tell where to draw the line until our body starts to tell us otherwise. To get rest you need to shut two things, your computer and your eyes. Scientists measuring sleepiness have found that sleep deprivation leads to lower alertness and concentration. It's more difficult to focus and pay attention, so you're more easily confused. This hampers your ability to perform tasks that require logical reasoning or complex thought. GO TO SLEEP!

  2. Do something else: This is pretty obvious right? maybe not. You might be wondering, how do I focus on something while doing something else? It's important to let your subconscious wander. The mind is such a great asset to us humans. The Subconscious mind controls 95 percent of your life. Not all that surprising really as our subconscious mind controls each and every physical movement, whether voluntary or involuntary. Todays science estimates that 95 percent of our brains activity is unconscious, meaning that the majority of the decisions we make, the actions we take, our emotions and behaviours, depend on the 95 percent of brain activity that lies beyond conscious awareness. 3. Eat healthy: According to the World health organisation, a healthy diet helps to protect against malnutrition in all its forms, as well as noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. Here are a few ways you can eat smarter:

  4. Eat at regular intervals: Eating regular meals helps keep nutrient and energy levels more stable.

  • Always eat breakfast: It's always a good idea to start your day with a meal, no matter how light. You'll have a relatively better day.
  • Get your vitamins in: Eat fruits, use supplements as recommended by a doctor, eat a lot of greens.

  • Stay hydrated: It is extremely important to stay hydrated always to avoid a nervous breakdown. Someone who is well hydrated will find that they have much more energy than those who don’t consume enough water during the day.

Instead of coffee, try taking tea. Herbal teas like mint, chamomile, ginseng or lemon calm your nerves and are beneficial for your health. Drink milk, yoghurt, fresh fruits, dried fruits etc.

4.Take sanity walks: There's a lot that could go wrong from being inactive for so long, so once in a while, listen to some good music, and take a walk around your neighbourhood. You'll feel a whole lot better.

Above all, take your time to re-evaluate your choices and the reason you got started in the first place. We all get tired every now and then, what sets you apart is your ability to carry on.
